Kikambala Aid Trust

to provide water, electricity and sanitation in Kikambala villages

JANUARY 2010

After almost 5 years of working in Kikambala we have visited and reviewed a number of our projects.

1/     Our first projects at Kadzengo were the connection to electricity and the digging of a well. We have been amazed to see the influence these have had on the day to day life of those living in the area.

The well is in daily use, the tank being filled at least 3 times a day. Each tank holds 2500 litres of water. A very small amount is paid for each can of water. This money is used for electricity costs and the maintenance of the pump.

Since the electricity connection quite a number of new houses have been built and connected to electricity. Also other pre existing homes have been connected. The area now has some shops and there are also new buildings across the main road benefitting from the electric power.

We had no idea of the knock on effects of these projects.

2/      The well which was dug at Mikanjuni, Mtwapa is also extensively used. Water is sold to a nearby hotel in addition to use by local people.

The electricity connection at Mikanjuni has also meant that some people who had been waiting for more than 10 years are now connected. A new transformer was installed for our project.

3/      One of our more recent projects was the connection of electricity at Bomani, a small community to the north side of the main road.

We visited this project to see its completion to be told that a number of houses had also been connected. One of the most pleasing things to hear was the connection of the small local clinic. They had solar panels but with the mains electric power have opened a 2 bed maternity ward. The electricity is needed for the sterilization of equipment. Local mums will no longer have to travel to Vipingo or Kilifi. A trained nurse has accommodation on site.
